On sites from 10 - 200 hectares in size, geophysical investigations normally proceed in reconnaissance mode by conducting a systematic scan of a given area, with further examination of significant targets by detailed survey. This procedure is undertaken employing fluxgate gradiometry.
The scan is conducted throughout each section of the site along transects spaced at 10m intervals. Where significant targets or response concentrations occur, these are examined in closer detail, to eliminate where possible, potential interference from modern ferrous debris, former cultivation and natural geological / soil variation.
Responses of definite archaeological character and those requiring further characterisation are tied-in to the OS and selected for detailed survey.
